    Launch Intensity Layout Capacity Discomfort

I still remember the marketing campaign for "The Blast Coaster"- on TV and Pepsi cans all over the Mid-Atlantic. It would take several years before my first trip to KD to experience it, and now that it's gone I'm glad I was able to get several rides in over a couple different visits. First things first: the launch was awesome. As my first launched inverted coasted (and to this day, one of only two I've ridden), I was blown away by the straight-up "eruption" up and out of the top of ol' Smurf Mountain. I will admit, the layout was a bit aimless after reaching the high point, but a few well-placed heartline rolls were sufficient while enjoying the views of the park and the very expansive parking lot. Being a 2-by launched train, capacity wasn't great but luckily I rode Volcano late enough in its life to avoid any lengthy lines. RIP

Theming Inversions Launch Too short Layout

Volcano is a ride that really added to the uniqueness of King Dominion, and it's a shame it never got to coexist with Twisted Timbers. The launches were great, the theming was outstanding, and the ride was exciting. The barrel rolls are fun and the volcano is awesome. The layout is repetitive and too short, but that adds to how unique and quirky this ride was.

Theming Inversions Launch Too short Reliability

Volcano was a great coaster. The launches were amazing, particularly the second launch. The inversions were all extremely fun.Volcano wasn't a statistical beast or anything. It was just pure fun. The inversions were slow enough that the slowness was fun. The launches were powerful. It was a very well-done ride.

Launch Too short Disappointing! Dead spots

Coming in, I was told that Volcano was the 2nd best coaster at Kings Dominion — only to the legendary Intimidator 305. Unfortunately, this was not the case, but regardless Volcano made for a thrilling and unique ride. The volcano itself was an excellent piece of scenery that was a major eye-catcher from anywhere else in the Safari Village, and made the coaster just that more daunting from afar. The first launch gave some kick to it, and the turn immediately succeeding was not very forceful. The zippy second launch into the 155-foot sidewinder packed a punch — it’s a real “WOW” moment that was for sure the highlight of this coaster. However, Volcano just peters out after this point; the turn-into-heartline-roll sequence is quite repetitive, and taken at a speed just too slow for any whip yet just too fast to give any decent hangtime. The 80-foot dive finale caught me off guard somewhat, but that was shortlived as the train slammed into the final brake run. All in all, Volcano was a fun coaster with a great setting and one moment of awesomeness; yet, because it wasn’t nearly as intense as I’d been told, I was let down. I certainly miss it, but not as much as several other coasterfans do.
