Superman: Ultimate Flight is a neat flying coaster: its restraints and harness are surprisingly more comfortable than it looks. The first dive into the reverse loop is crazy. The forces hit you different. There’s also a double roll later on that’s awesome. It makes you feel like Superman flying through the sky. Aside from these 2 inversions, the layout is underwhelming and just meanders about for a few more turns before ending. The ride is shorter than I expected and tends to have long lines due to loading times and it running one train. The building looks cool too.

Green Lantern was a polarizing standup coaster. It garnered a lot of hate due to its discomfort with the standup mechanic and headbanging which I agree were issues. The capacity, no lines, and long layout made up for this though. The banked turn into the drop was a great suspenseful element and the loop and inverted loop were unique and forceful. The layout had around 7-8 inversions and had a cool replica jet in the zone. This would be rated a lot higher for most if it was a floorless, but was still a fun ride.

Talon is an intense and smooth suspended coaster located at the very right of the park. The view of the parking lot and rest of the park is cool when whipped around into the first drop and loop. The pacing on this ride is great, as it does not let up at all from start to finish. The double rolls are smooth and intense, and the banked turns and leg-chopper drop are very fun during the back half. The park has done well at maintaining the quality of this coaster and it shows!

Hydra: The Revenge is an excellent floorless coaster that lives up to its name with its countless inversions, twists, and turns. It is one of the rare models that has a barrel roll right out of the station! The smoothness and pace of this ride are very impressive considering the ride being over 20 years old. The many inversions include corkscrews, a cobra roll, a barrel roll, and a zero-g roll and are very forceful with the ride not letting up from start to finish.

Steel Force is an out and back style hyper coaster located near the back of the park. As the tallest coaster in the park, it towers above the others and gives great views. The first few drops are fun and smooth, going through tunnels and the helix towards the water is intense and forceful, and the mini hills coming back to the station have good airtime. A lot of the first few drops are weaker than expected, but the duration, location, and sheer smoothness of this coaster make up for it.

Possessed is a unique coaster model that features suspended cars on a double launched shuttle track where you are launched up a twisting spike before getting launched backwards up a straight spike. The launches forwards and backwards are quite intense and a front row seat is a must on this ride in order to reach the very top of the twisted spike. It’s short and there’s some headbanging, but it truly feels like you’re possessed on this ride!

Iron Menace is a newer BM dive coaster that is apart of the Steel Mill section of the park. Seating 3 rows of 7 riders, you ascend a hill before hanging over a 150 ft drop and plunging into a banked turn before hitting a roll and a 3/4 loop before hitting another turn and finishing at the brake run. The theming of being at a steel mill is excellent and the restraints are pretty cozy. The layout itself is quite boring and very short compared to other dive coasters which is a big downside of this ride.

Thunderhawk is a classic woodie that recently turned 100 last year. With that being said, it definitely shows its age, as there is major rattling on quite a few of the banked turns. I mistakenly put my hands up on a drop and got slammed into the side of the car. The first drop is fun and some of the hills are lacking with the layout not being as good as it could be.

Wildcat was an intense and rough woodie located at the far left of the park that was quite fun. The banked turns and first drop were solid and there were moments where you were flung out of your seat. That being said, there’s a reason the park decided to RMC this attraction: the layout was nothing special and the rattle was immense. The ride definitely lived up to its name.

The Flash: Vertical Velocity is the first super boomerang to debut in the United States with a launched start, onboard audio, and a smooth and unique layout. The ride has you going both forwards and backwards on a zero g roll, an Immelmann, and a double down as you embody the Flash on this ride. The spike tower with the lightning logo is neat, but you don’t ascend to the top completely, there’s only one train running resulting in long lines, and the ride commonly breaks down at random intervals. Still a fun ride!

Wooden Warrior is a great, lap-able ride for what it is: a fun family woodie with some sharp hills, a nice first drop, and a tunnel section. I can’t rate this higher because its layout is rather basic, the hills and turns aren’t very big, and it is a very short ride. However, you do get lots of airtime moments despite the stature of this fun ride. I do believe this won some awards for best family ride and I can see why.

Goliath was a suspended SLC clone which was pretty rare to encounter. It had 2 vertical towers that dropped you forwards and backwards into a suspended loop and an inverted cobra roll, which is a unique element that is quite intense. The harness tended to pinch you and smooshed your legs during the ride which was a bit uncomfortable. Great inversions and drops, not the best restraints or layout.

Pandemonium is a family spin coaster that seats 4 to a car as you descend a curvy, bumpy track with twists and drops while it spins around. There aren’t a lot of cars in cycle and it has low capacity resulting in long lines. The ride is also notorious for breaking down for whatever reason. There are some good surprises if facing away from the drops or turns and different rides can have different outcomes.

Harley Quinn Crazy Train is a rather intense family ride that has some turns that are low to the ground, however, you feel the whiplash of them, especially during the turn at the end. The train has a lot of cars and the ride ops seem very engaged which is fun to see. The turns can be uncomfortable if not anticipating them and the train cycles the layout twice. One more time!

Runaway Mine Train is SFGrA first roller coaster debuting in 1974 and its age definitely shows. The location with a castle like building as the station with the final turn going over the water is cool and the helixes are fine. There is one crazy ejector moment at the hill right before the final drop that flung me out of my seat, but not in a good way. Skill Mountain is a better alternative in my opinion.

Skull Mountain is a rather intense family coaster located entirely indoors in the dark. The theming for this ride is above and beyond for Six Flags: it’s in a cavern with a rock skull formed in the top of it. The queue feels like you’re in the caves of a mountain. The first drop, especially in the back, is crazy forceful and will make your stomach drop. There are slow spots and some turns that cause a bit of whiplash, but a solid time all in all.

Gotham City Gauntlet is a wild mouse clone themed to Batman’s villains, with the theme for each car being a different one. The lap bars are very short so you have to kind of cram in there. The turns and dips are very jerky and fun. For some reason you can only sit 2 to a car resulting in a longer line than expected. The brakes at the end will whiplash you pretty good, just a heads up. Standard apart from that.

Catwoman’s Whip is exactly what you’ll get riding this: whipped around helixes multiple times with some intense forces. The layout is very short and low to the ground, but can seat a lot of people. A more kid friendly ride that goes around the cycle twice. I don’t know why ops refuse to fill this up more than halfway though. Can be a bit rough if you don’t anticipate turns.

The Riddler Revenge is a Vekoma SLC clone that used to be called Mind Eraser before being themed to the Riddler and painted green as part of the DC area of the park. It is one of the more tolerable SLCs due to the updated harness you have to prevent major headbanging. That being said, it is still reasonably rough with a rattle to it. The ride is intense and the pretzel knot feature is forceful as is the inline twists. The inversions are snappy and fun. You know what you’re gonna get.

Thunderbolt is a classic woodie that was one of the first rides at the park before Six Flags bought it. The entrance sign is retro, but the entrance is crammed between a couple buildings and a drop tower. This coaster has a basic dip and turn layout that offers some airtime and a decently long ride time. The age is noticeable based on there being slow sections and a rattle going on throughout the ride.

The Dark Knight is a relocated indoor souped up wild mouse that was used to promote the 2008 movie The Dark Knight. There is a preloading film where the Joker hacks a news press conference which can be unsettling. The cars are train themed and the layout is supposed to be Gotham’s subway system. The city cutouts, fog, and flashing lights add to the decent theming this ride does. The turns can eject you sideways in the dark and at the end of the day it’s just an improved wild mouse.

This Joker 4D coaster is amongst a clone of free spin archetypes across the country. Located at the center of the park by the lake, the capacity and lines struggle early. The ride is also very short and you have to wait for a while at the bottom while the op loads other people on. You can choose to face the lift forwards or backwards and choose a wing between left and right. That being said, this is one of the better ones that rocks up the lift and has twice as many inversions as the one at SFNE and is a bit more intense than others in my opinion. Every ride is different and it is very lap able. I recommend the wing facing the lake going backwards for the best experience.

Batman: The Ride is one of many BM Batman clones that were distributed across many SF parks. The ride recently got a gold paint job that looks good and has solid theming for a SF ride with the Batmobile out in front and with the station being the Batcave. There’s even Batman’s suit on a wall. Don’t let the fact that this is a clone fool you: it is intense! Headbanging is a minor issue, however, the small loop, heartline rolls, and helixes all produce big G Forces that make this a blast.

Kingda Ka. The king of all coasters. This was the tallest coaster with the largest drop in the world for 19 long years and the fastest in North America. The initial launch is one of the most intense elements on any ride you’ll find, accelerating from 0-121 mph in 3.5 seconds. The epic top hat into the 3/4 roll drop into an airtime hill. The best part was that there was a chance you get a rollback: when the train doesn’t make it over the top hat and you go down the drop backwards back into the station to the sounds of cheers. Rollbacks were rare, but possible. That being said, the ride is incredibly short, has low capacity per train, and was notorious for breaking down multiple times and being very unreliable, not to mention expensive. I’m glad I got my last rides closing weekend including in the front seat on a night ride. This was a mandatory bucket list attraction for any coaster enthusiast. Long live the King.

Medusa is a great floorless coaster in the left corner of the park and usually does not have long lines because of this. It was re-themed to Bizarro before being refurbished back to Medusa. The first dive drop into the loops and corkscrews is very smooth and forceful. The Immelmanns and snake rolls have excellent hangtime to them. The theming when it was Bizarro was solid. There were building cutouts and a corkscrew into a drill and even flamethrowers that would go off after hitting a cobra. Such a quality ride.

Nitro is a top tier BM hyper coaster that is a must ride at SFGrA. The lap bars are super comfy and unrestrictive, leading to glorious floater airtime moments on its many camelbacks. The ops do really well with loading and unloading and the line moves quite fast. The views of the park from the lift hill are glorious as you can see Ka, the Skyscreamer, and some of the safari from up there. The helixes provide strong forces at the end and the little hills on the final third are wonderful. I recommend a wing seat to get the full experience.’

Jersey Devil Coaster lives up to its name: this RMC single rail ride is non stop action from its crazy first drop, to its zero g stall, ejector hills, and double downs. This is a single rider train meaning you cannot sit next to anyone while riding it which can make it more intimidating for some. The front and back are where you want to be and I was lucky to ride the very back three times. There is unfortunately assigned seating meaning you don’t choose where you want to sit and the hills can thrash you around on the ride. This crazy demon is worth it.

El Toro is up there with the best of the best and is arguably one of the best woodies in the world. Sitting right next to Kingda Ka, this intense ride has a ~180ft first drop that knocks your socks off and doesn’t stop at all whether going through bumps, around banked, low turns or dives. The ejector airtime you get on the camelbacks is absurd. You will be uncomfortable during the ride and there is a significant rattle as of recent, but that just enhances how wild this woodie is. The name is 100% fitting: you are riding a bull.

Verbolten is a more intense family launch coaster located in the Germany section of the park. It has excellent theming to that of the Autobahn with race car trains and a station resembling a pit stop. It features 2 launches, with the first keeping your momentum right into it before you enter a dark indoor section resembling the Black Forest. This ride is incredibly unique due to the track suddenly dropping to a lower section at the midpoint of the ride. I can’t think of any other rides that do this. You finish with the 2nd launch before the famed banked drop on the river which was The Big Bad Wolf’s signature feature. Great ride!
