Airtimes Pace Smoothness Reliability
Unfortunately, I was only able to get one ride on Lightning Rod in the third row (it closed for the day about an hour after park opening), but it was phenomenal. The airtime, smoothness, pace was all on point. It feels like you are engulfed in its massive structure. It is truly one of the most fun coasters I have been on. RMC created a masterful layout and used the terrain to its full potential. The second half is absolutely bonkers. The only downside is its horrible reliability. I was glad to be able to ride it when I could. I cannot imagine this thing all warmed up, and I can't wait to get back some day and see what it is truly capable of. But even with a morning ride it is for sure a fantastic ride.

Ejectors
Great ride, but it goes down a lot. Do not be disappointed if it is closed when you go to the park

Airtimes Intensity Ejectors Too short Launch
It was so fun the best thing ever it was I little intense for me the first time bc of Gs couldn’t push my head back I didn’t know I had to and now it’s just fun and intense great airtime and ejectors but it’s too short and the launch not the best
-
Theming Launch Masterpiece
Felt like I was flying and the launch was very powerful I've only ridden one rmc and wish to ride more soon
-
Airtimes First Drop Intensity Too short
Wow. This ride is truly incredible. One of the best RMC’s I’ve ever ridden. The first launch is more intense than it looks, and the ride only gets better from there. The first drop over the mountain is awesome, the overbank turns are fantastic, and the airtime hills complete the experience. I’ve done a number of RMCs, and this one is up there. Two flaws with this ride come in the lack of inversions, and the duration. It’s just slightly too short and could use an extra 20-30 seconds in my opinion. But, the granddaddy of flaws is how unreliable it is. It seems to constantly break down and often closes early for the day entirely. I recommend bolting to this attraction at the beginning of the day so you can be sure to get on. Massively unreliable as some RMCs tend to be, but a fantastic experience if you get the opportunity.

Comfort Launch Ejectors Disappointing!
Finally got back to Dollywood, and I guess I’ll be forever in the minority on LR. Still find the layout to be good but not great. The only parts that do anything for me are the launch and the quad-down, which is really fun. But there’s now a pretty rough section of track after the wave turn, a roughness I’ve never felt on an RMC. The ejectors are the best part, but I prefer the better variety of elements on other RMCs. Still a top 30 coaster for me, though.
-
Airtimes Location Intensity Capacity
When it's open, it's one of the most elite launching coasters around. The launch is not the star though, it's the hidden layout over the mountain and the quad down finale.
-
Masterpiece Smoothness Layout Reliability
On my morning ride, it was great, but just didn’t have the strong ejector that I was expecting. However, when I rode it again in the afternoon, it was absolutely hauling and felt like a totally different ride. I got a back row ride and finally got a taste of that RMC ejector I know and love. Got incredible floa-jecter on the second overbank in row 3. The layout on the hilly terrain is unbelievable. What a masterpiece.
-
Airtimes Masterpiece Intensity Too short
Lightning Rod is an elite coaster for sure. It’s very unique with its LSM lift, and it flies through its layout. The quad down is the single best element on any coaster I’ve ridden, other than velocicoaster’s mosasarus roll. Plus Lrod makes perfect use of the terrain. Go to Dollywood and ride it.
-
Airtimes Launch Ejectors
One if the best RMCs in the world I'd say! You start with a great launch and it's just nonstop speed and ejectors the whole way. but Quad down makes up for it! Never got to ride with the topper track btw
-
Airtimes Launch Ejectors Too short
What is their to say about this ride? The launch is cool (not storm runner good, but good none the less), the pacing never slows down, your out pf ypur seat more then your in it, theirs the quad down, the wave turn and everything else. I never rode befor the neutered l rod so can compare it to that, but cant imagine it being bad now compaired to that..... the ride is short, but thats probably becuse the speed, and the ride seems to have a few gremlins, past that top 5 coaster
-
Fun
I got my ride earlier in the morning, when it hadn't warmed up, yet. I sat in the back, though.
-
Launch Intensity Reliability
This thing was great back in 2019 before they made it go super slow but it was to fix its reliability which it went down 7 times during the day.
-
Launch Intensity Ejectors Reliability
LRod is one of the greatest creations known to man. This thing is honestly unbelievable to actually be existing with how godly it is. I’ve only ridden this as an all wooden coaster but I seriously doubt it’s that much weaker now. From the launch to that final brake run this thing is absolutely non stop with ungodly strong airtime both in both sustained moments and quick pops and some insane sideways moments of it. The drop is absolutely unreal with the terrain and coming into it with that much speed, the wave turn is just bonkers, the first twist and shout isn’t as much about airtime as it is with laterals but still is unbelievable but that second one is my favorite singular airtime moment and it’s the one coaster moment that makes me feel like I’m gonna die the most, the step up into the quad down is amazing and the quad down itself is unlike anything else I’ve experienced and the greatest airtime sequence probably on any coaster with the strength, quickness and terrain factor and that speed hill is just a continuation of that. This also has some very good positives with the valley after the drop and all the turns throughout and the final half loop, and not to forget the launch itself is pretty dang forceful and just so cool on a woodie. This ride is honestly pretty smooth and just the terrain factor and being a wooden coaster made the sense of speed feel dangerous on this. Very few coasters can top this or really come super close for me.
-
Airtimes Location Launch Too short
Its too short because of how fast it is. The pacing is great. It literally does not give you a break. My favorite coaster that I have ridden.
-
Airtimes Ejectors Theming Disappointing! Pointless
This ride is a decent wooden rollercoaster but it doesn’t compare to many others that I’ve ridden. The best things about it are the ejector airtime’s. And the rest of the ride is boring, pointless and is not worth the long queue. Also, it lacks theming. I mean don’t get me wrong it’s not the worst ride but it is very overrated.
-
Location Pace Ejectors Reliability
This is an amazing coaster, the pacing and the airtime is some of the best on the planet, it doesn't even feel short, unfortunately i wish this ride had positives, this ride easily gets 5 stars for me
-
Airtimes Location Reliability
Elite-level use of terrain. Quick, smooth and plenty airtime - not of the Steel Vengeance verging on insanity variety. Launch is not all that powerful and crest of lift hill isn't the ejector seat that earlier reviews imply. Much fun to be had all the same and probably a top-20 ride. Reliability is still a problem, and probably always will be. Ride this early at all costs.
-
Airtimes Masterpiece Ejectors
Just unbelievable on every single ride. Rode four times in row 8, twice in row 9, once in row 3. It was absolutely incredible. Every element is perfect. The wave turn is a phenomenal moment, the second off-axis hill is ridiculous, and then every hill after that is nuts. It hauls, never ever letting up. It was mostly smooth, save for one rough patch after the wave turn. The launch has some power, but mostly thrives on the sustained force of launching you up the hill. The quad down is for real.
-
Pace Masterpiece Ejectors
Immaculate setting, great pacing, and my favorite coaster sequence ever (Quad down). This coaster absolutely delivers.
-
Airtimes Masterpiece Intensity
One if the best RMCs in the world I'd say! You start with a great launch and it's just nonstop speed and ejectors the whole way. Twist n' Shout is overrated but Quad down makes up for it! Never got to ride with the topper track btw
-
Airtimes Masterpiece Ejectors Capacity Reliability
Sooooooo epic, launch feels so fast, quad down… ?, just one train with bad ops? Got to 185 minutes on my visit, and only operated about 50% of the time, still my number two behind Fury
-
Airtimes Intensity Ejectors Too short Reliability
Lightning Rod is certainly in my top 5. If it was longer, it'd certainly knock SteVe off. However, the lack of length and lack of reliability seriously impact this. Because I wasn't able to get a ride in the 2016 Era, the launch felt somewhat weak and noticeably slowed down at the top. Millie's cable felt faster, especially at the very top. The length was also another major issue. These issues, however, do not change the fact that the entirety of the ride was possibly the best minute or so I've ever experienced on a ride. I don't think an element has left me as stunned as the quad down at the end of the ride. People love to trash this ride, and while it is certainly not perfect, when it's hauling through the course the sensation of flying through the Tennessee hills feeling completely out of control is unmatched by anything, even SteVe's best moments.

Airtimes Intensity Ejectors
Lightning Rod is one of the greatest roller coasters ever built. This thing is non-stop action. It’s got the strong ejector airtime, intensity, and great pacing. My favorite part of the ride is the quad-down finale since I got ejected and I went flying out of my seat as I got whipped all around as the ride was zig-zagging all the way through! It is truly one of the best finales on any coaster! Overall, Lightning Rod is by far the best wooden coaster I’ve ridden as of 2021.

Airtimes Location Intensity Disappointing! Lap Bar
Lightning Rod was all the rage back in 2016. No one talked about anything BUT the world’s first launched wooden coaster, meaning that my hype for this ride had skyrocketed for when I would finally get to experience it in October 2016. It certainly did live up to my absurdly high expectations, but I woke up with black-and-blue bruises the next morning. I re-rode Lightning Rod multiple times in 2017, and while the airtime was great, I didn’t find this altered version of Lightning Rod to be nearly as intense or airtime-filled as when I'd ridden it the first time around. There’s no denying that Lightning Rod is a very impressive coaster — however, the quality of my more recent rides didn't match the sheer insanity that this coaster delivered back in October 2016. It’s the flagship attraction at Dollywood and a must-ride for any coaster enthusiast like me, but I have yet to understand why others rate it so much higher than I do.

Airtimes First Drop Ejectors Reliability
I rode Lightning Rod in May of 2021 right after the I-Box retrack, and I loved every little bit of it (except reliability). The launch was decently forceful, the drop provided great airtime, the wave turn gave stellar sideways hangtime/airtime, and the twist and shout is just insane. One of the most underrated moments of the ride is the airtime hills leading up to the quad down. These provide INSANE ejector, and I might even prefer them to the quad down. The quad down itself is a bit overrated, but the ejector is great. Overall, Lightning Rod is a great RMC that places at #3 in my rankings (#2- Fury 325 #1- Steel Vengeance).
-
Airtimes Masterpiece Ejectors
This is my second favorite coaster I've ridden. The ejector on this ride is some of the strongest I've experienced and it's such a fast paced ride. I have not ridden this since the retrack but I hope it's as amazing as when I rode it in July 2020
-
Pace Smoothness Ejectors
I rode this ride fresh off of its retrack. It should be noted that I don't have a prior experience to compare it to but it was running very fast and smooth. My main complaint is that while it ran consistently all day without breaking down, it operated with one train while it had a 145 minute wait. It was annoying but I assume something was wrong with the other train. This ride is near perfect my only problem with it was that the quad down wasn't as good as I thought it would be. My favorite element was the outerbank after the twist and shout. It had the perfect mix of sustained, yet powerful airtime.
-
Airtimes Pace Intensity Reliability
Easily the best RMC I've ridden. This ride has the strongest airtime I've experienced on any coaster. The ride is pretty intense aswell and the pacing is top notch. This is my number #1 coaster

Airtimes Fun Masterpiece
Wow. What can I say about this ride. My first ever RMC and it did not disappoint! Had a front row ride and a back row ride. Hands down the most fun you can have on a rollercoaster. Amazing wave turn and outside banked turn. I do believe the quad down in the front row is a little over hyped but it is still fun. Thank you RMC and Dollywood for this perfect ride
-
Location Masterpiece Ejectors Too short
Fantastic. I rode this just before it closed for the partial retrack, and I will say, it was decently rough, but not too bad. The theming and setting alone are wonderful, and combined with the coaster itself, it's almost dreamlike. There's tons of strong airtime, stronger than any other I've ever felt. The ride isn't really short, it just feels that way because of how fast you fly through the entire layout and how you don't want it to end. I know Lightning Rod has gone through many technical problems, but for my weekend at Dollywood, it wasn't broken down for a single second. Call it luck, but it says something when you can operate a one-of-a-kind ride like this more consistently than your B&M wing coaster.
-
Intensity Discomfort
I rode it twice, once in the back row and once in the middle, and both were some of the least enjoyable rides i've ever been on. The layout is awesome, but the ride just hurt like hell and was incredibly uncomfortable. The ride broke down both times we were in line as well, making it even less enjoyable. Almost all other reviews seem to say this coaster is amazing though. So maybe it just had an off day? I'll try it again next time I'm in the area, and can hopefully update my rating.
-
Airtimes Launch Intensity Too short
I was on a trip to USA last year with 27 other Dutch and Belgian Coaster fans. And we did already great coasters but this RMC was fenomenal. The launch on the lift hill is amazing so fast and then the real deal is the quadrupple down, THis element is so fun. I've ridden it in the mornig like 12 times because we had an hour ERT but the evening ride is the best with coaster because you don't see anything of the track in the dark. I rank this coaster as number 7 what a great 3rd RMC.

Location Intensity Ejectors
This damn ride... my good lord. To this day, Lightning Rod is the one and only coaster that has given me an adrenaline rush that felt legitimately addictive. After almost every one of my 10 rides I NEEDED to get right back on it. Although it's had its well-documented reliability issues, I was lucky enough for it to be running very consistently when I visited last summer, to the point where a friend and I managed to marathon it for an hour or so on the first of our 2 days at Dollywood. The only time I didn't feel to re-ride was after that marathon session where I looked at my friend and said "yo my body needs a break." This thing is absolutely relentless from start to finish, and even so, it somehow hits another gear halfway through it. There are so many moments which characterise the nature of this coaster, but everything after the two wave turns is why Lightning Rod is my #1. From the off-axis airtime hill onwards, it's complete bedlam, and the quad down and subsequent speed hill might be my favourite coaster sequence I've ever experienced. As if the avalanche-like nature of the quad down wasn't enough, the speed hill which flies between the launch and the brake run, feels as though the train is crashing through a brick wall. Pure, unadulterated aggression. This coaster showed me definitively what my favourite coaster characteristics are - sense of speed, aggression, whippy elements and transitions, strong forces. Airtime is cool, but I much prefer it when it is implemented with the purpose of a sense of speed/aggression behind it, eg. LRod's world beating finale. LRod has the potential to stay at my #1 spot for a very long time. A truly special experience that very well may not be beaten for me anytime soon.
-
Airtimes First Drop Fun Reliability
The one and only Lightning Rod. After over 240 rides across every single operating version of it, It is still my all-time favorite! The launch, airtime, pacing, and theme are all fantastic!
-
Location Pace Ejectors
It is an intense ride with POWERFUL airtime. It's not the longest ride, but if it was longer, it might be too much to handle, it is that insane. This is the only coaster to beat Steel Vengeance for me and I've been a SteVen fanboy for a while.
-
Pace Masterpiece Ejectors
This is my number 1 without a doubt, no other RMC even comes close to packing in the full package like this ride does, it has the airtime of Storm Chaser, the Setting of Outlaw Run, the Pacing of Zadra. This coaster is indeed perfect, and with a night ride marathon on this thing, I came of in pain from the airtime, but it was pure joy.
-
Airtimes Ejectors Launch
For all its problem during its first season, Lightning Rod is well worth the wait. A cocktail of beautiful hillside mixed with utterly relentless air time, particularly on the ludicrous hillside finale. Whilst the launch itself is lacking any significant grunt, the remainder of the ride that hides over the crest of the first hill is downright bonkers and a thorough joy right to the last moment.
-
Airtimes Pace Ejectors Reliability
Every element after the launch has ejector, and most of it is extremely strong ejector. The ride starts with a fun launch which goes directly into a short but intense ejector moment which then leads into the amazing first drop which provides strong, sustained ejector in every row. The ride then has a strong moment of positives before it goes into the wave turn which has surprising sideways ejector which is also well sustained. The ride entered maybe the most disappointing part of the ride for me, the outward banked wave turn has good ejector throughout the whole element however it doesn’t compare to Wildfire’s version of the element. The following twist and shout had very strong ejector and laterals, making it one of my favourite elements ever. The step up into the quad down has maybe the strongest moment on the ride in the front row, but then the ride enters the first hill of the quad down which is also really strong. Each subsequent hill on this journey down the hill gets more intense except for the final hill which focuses more on laterals. The only rough patch on the ride is the bottom of the final hill of the quad down, but it still isn’t that bad and before you can process it you flying through an ejector speed hill. The ride ends with an intense turn which has great ejector and whip on the exit. So overall this ride is amazing, every element is phenomenal, making Lightning Rod my favourite coaster.
-
Launch Fun Intensity
LRod doesn't have a weakness. Its been reliable lately so hopefully that's all solved. Launch is bonkerz. Theming is perfect. Location is perfect. RMC trains are great. Pacing is fantastic. Ejector air is great. Strong and intense the whole way through. It's like the wooden version of Skyrush; its fast, its intense, it has insane ejector, it has a fast lift hill, no inversions, and sort of hates you. Amazing Ride.
-
Location Intensity Ejectors Reliability
Lightning Rod is by far my favorite roller coaster of all time, beating other coasters like Fury and TTD. It has airtime unlike any other coaster every, it’s so powerful and non stop that after a few rides your legs might be bruised from it. My favorite experience on it though was in 40 degree weather at night, by far the most intense experience on any coaster I’ve ever ridden. The only issue with the ride would obviously be reliability, it took a while for me to get my first ride in this because it was always broken down. Of course now it’s a lot better but you still have The fear of it breaking down and not being able to ride it.

Airtimes Pace Fun Reliability
Dolly has really outdone herself with this magnificent roller coaster. If her coaster's were like her songs, this one would be her "Jolene". What a number one hit this is. The epic uphill launch was a nice touch. The entire coaster makes use of the hill terrain found in the region of the Smoky Mountains. The speed is intense and just doesn't let up, it only gets faster as it comes down the hill. The wave turn is gigantic and lovely. The old woodie feel is just right. Alan Schilke deserves the highest award for how this thing came out.
-
Airtimes Intensity Ejectors
My first ride, I wasn't 100% sold on its greatness. After a few back-to-back night rides, however, it launched its way up my favorite coasters of all time rankings. The air is crazy, ejector style. Literally on the border of downright frightening and/or painful. It isn't painful at all though. Truly on the edge of what our bodies can withstand and still enjoy. The most intense ejector air ever, by a wide, wide margin. Crazy fun. The launch up the hill is...interesting, not necessarily spectacular, just different--it does give a decent air pop over the top. Then the 90 degree banked turns at the top of the hills were truly disorienting--especially at night. Then the return trip home down the mountain. Truly epic. Air, then air, then air, then air again. The whole time you are getting faster and faster and more and more intense. Good times for sure. Great coaster for sure. Truly a world class thrill machine.

Launch Pace Ejectors Rattle Reliability
I have ridden this thing at least 100 times. My first ride was in late 2016. So... rare credit! The airtime on LR is so strong that if you aren't stapled, you can see where the seatbelt dug into your lap. Last time I rode LR, in was mid-August 2019 and it closed twice while I was in line, so try to ride early in the day.
-
Airtimes Theming Location
One of 4 coasters I’ve ridden so far that I consider to be perfect. I live unique rides and this is one. Only launched woodie, hugs the terrain, well themed. It has everything I want. The launch is great the wave turns throw you out if your seat and the quad down is arguably the greatest airtime Moment there is.
-
Masterpiece Intensity Hangtime
10 out of 10! This is a perfect coaster with the speed and big jumps like Shawn White in the half pike. For me it is the perfect amount of time you get all of the excitement not too much to be overbearing but you don’t feel cheated. I got to ride this front, back and middle and loved ever location.
-
Airtimes Masterpiece Intensity
Out of 159 credits including Steel Vengeance, Japanese and Chinese Credits, most of the East Coaster, Lighting Rod reigns not only as my #1 wooden but #1 overall.
-
First Drop Pace Intensity Too short
Lightning Rod is the king of ejector air. The launch is neat, the location is great, it is truly a relentless beast, but, frankly, the imfamous quadruple-down makes this coaster. To put it simply, Lighting Rod is a full buffet-worth of airtime that Dollywood aggressively shoves down your throat till you simply can't handle anymore. This is the type or coaster that you are out of breath on when you arrive back at the station. Somehow despite its incredible intensity, this coaster remains comfortable too. Fast, smooth, and ferocious—what's not to love?
-
Location Intensity Ejectors Harness
What a wild and intense ride! Love the "launched" lift hill, the pre-drop and the following "first drop". The rest of the layout hugs the terrain and was a little bit too hectic for my tastes (especially the quadruple down wasn't as fun as I expected - you are thrown against the restraints four times in a row). After riding Wildfire in Kolmarden, I also wish they had added an inversion or two, because RMC inversions are exceptionally great. But still, one of the best coasters I have ever ridden.
